Day 2 of the trip begins deep into the night at San Antonio, TX. Departng west, we pass near Laughlin Air Force Base at the border town of Del Rio. Unfortunately, it is
so dark, nothing can be seen. Farther on we pass Lantry, home of the notorious "Judge" Roy Bean.
We begin to see sunrise at Comstock, with final sunrise at Dryden. As we continure on, we begin to get into the more desert like areas, but this is desert with lots of vegetaion and constant areas of cactus along the track. Sandesron professes to be the Cactus Capital of Texas. This is also site of the "last" train robery in 1912 at Baxter's Curve. |

After leaving Sanderson, we head west on a cold 25 degree norning. We pass through a long stretch af fairly flat terrain.
Marathon is a town with a poplulation in 2010 of 430 people and just over about halfway between Sanderson and Alpine.
Alpine is the warmest point on this day, reaching 54 degrees. Here we have a long station stop to change crews. The forward part of the train is allowed to disembark. When the crew change is complete, the train moves forward to allow the coach passengers to disembark. It is an unsettling period while the train starts moving and you aren't on it. After leaving Alpine, we have a long run to El Paso. We are very near the Mexican border. As we start entering El Paso proper, the fence that seperates Mexico from the US is on our left just a 100 yards away. When we arrive at El Paso Station, we have another long stop and sometime to shoot a few more photos. |

After leaving El Paso and passing through the railyards at Las Cruces, NM, our first venture into New Mexico, we head west and a short stop at Demming, NM.
We pass through thje little town of Wilna, NM.
Continuing on, we start heading into sunset around Lordsburg and enter Arizona around San Simon. we continue on until we reach Tucson. It is a long stop where we get tro spend time in its quaint station and view a hotroical steam engine. |
