DEPARTING LOS ANGELES SOUTHBOUND

Train 564 is the train from Los Angelese to San Diego, departing 7:02AM. Locomotive 2111 on the lead. THis is one of the new Siemens "Charger" units. Trailing unit is the Salute to Veterans painted "Cabbage" unit #90208. Christened NPCU, (Non-Powered Control Unit) or "Cabbage", the prime mover has been removed, the fuel tank sealed and a door installed in the side for baggage. It retains its control stand so it can lead the train when going opposite the powered locomotive. This eliminates the need to turn the unit at the destination. (An archive photo is included.) This is an active station and there are many trains and eqiuipment coming and going. As we leave the station, we parallel the Los Angeles River for several miles.

FULLERTON, CA

First stop is Fullerton, CA. The station is going through renovations. THere is a display of old Union PAcific passenger equipment and caboose.

ANAHEIM, CA

Five miles from Fullerton is Anaheim, home to Disneyland. Video was shot to see if any part of the complex could be seen, but none was available. Just past the station is the stadium where the Los Angeles Angels play MLB baseball.

Notice how most of the buildings along the right-of-way are of the same construction. Also notice how all of the grafitti on the building walls has been painted over. Chamber of Commerce in action.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA

Twenty-seven miles further south, we pass through San Juan Capistrano and then right along the shore at Capistano Beach. There wasn't much activity this morning since it was a brisk 54 degrees and fairly chilly for this time of year.

[4:40]

SAN CLEMENTE and CAMP PENDLETON

Continuing south, we stop at San Clemente and then pass through the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base reservation.

OCEANSIDE

Oceanside is a coastal city in California. It's known for palm-dotted Harbor Beach and nearby Oceanside Harbor, with its marina and shops. To the south, the long Oceanside Pier juts into the Pacific Ocean. Of course I was on the wrong side and photographed a small pond and dirty windows.

SOLANA BEACH

Solana Beach is a quaint Southern California oceanside community. So quaint that all I got was a photo of the statio stop sign.

SAN DIEGO, CA
